China Marine Culture Festival was initiated in Zhoushan in 2009. It is designed to show the world the city's rapid development and charming marine culture. It is also intended to display the city's strengths in marine industries and sciences and to raise people's awareness of ocean protection, and rational and effective exploitation of marine resources.

Activities in the 2009 festival included China Marine Culture Forum, Fishing Port Show, Seafood Cooking Competition, Sea Angling Invitational Tournament, Asia Sea Angling Championship, Fisherman Seafood Week, Marine Art Exhibition, Sailor's Day Ceremony and Sea Worship Ceremony.
