CUP is known as the “Cradle of Petroleum Talents” for cultivating nearly 200,000 excellent professional talents since its founding. With a distinctive characteristic in petroleum, CUP mainly focuses on engineering disciplines while having a coordinated development in multi-disciplines. Since its establishment, CUP has been in a leading position in the petroleum and petrochemical disciplines in China, making important contributions to the construction and development of related industries, and forming a certain influence in the world. According to the latest ESI statistics, CUP ranked within the top 1% in ESI in the world for 8 disciplines: Engineering, Chemistry, Geosciences, Material Science, Computer Science, Environment and ecology, General Social Sciences, and Mathematics, with the Engineering, Chemistry, Geosciences discipline getting into top 1‰ in ESI globally.

China University of Petroleum: A Journey of Excellence and Innovation in Petroleum Education

Established in 1953, the China University of Petroleum (CUP) began its journey as the Beijing Petroleum Institute, rapidly achieving national key university status by 1960, underscoring its significance in the educational sphere of China. By 1988, the university was upgraded and renamed University of Petroleum, consisting of University of Petroleum (Beijing) and University of Petroleum (East China). In 1994, CUP marked a significant milestone by resuming the recruitment of international students, successfully training over 4,000 talents from more than 100 countries in various energy disciplines. This global outreach was further recognized in 1997 when CUP was selected as one of the inaugural universities for China's "211" Project, highlighting its academic and research excellence. The year 2000 saw another significant transition as CUP came under the purview of the Ministry of Education, broadening its educational and research scope. Reflecting its expanded focus, the institution was renamed China University of Petroleum in 2005. A decade later, in 2015, CUP extended its academic footprint by opening a new campus in Karamay, an oil city Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, enhancing its educational and research capabilities. By 2017, CUP's commitment to excellence was further acknowledged as it was shortlisted for the national "Double World-class" Initiative, aiming to achieve world-class status in petroleum sciences. This rich history and unwavering dedication to excellence have cemented CUP's position as a pivotal educational institution in China and globally, making it a leader in petroleum and petrochemical engineering education and research.

Empowering Global Energy Education: China University of Petroleum's Strategic Collaborations and Innovations

CUP actively builds an international exchange and cooperation network and platform and has initiated the establishment of the Worldwide Energy University Network (WEUN) which has 31 member universities in the field of energy from 17 countries on 5 continents. CUP insists on the development philosophy of combining government. Till now, CUP has reached comprehensive cooperation agreements with 144 entities including domestic governments, enterprises, and public institutions. It has explored a new talent training model taking advantage of the resources from enterprises and the university: 76 petroleum and petrochemical enterprises have launched scholarships in CUP and 13 have built auditoriums with distinctive features of the enterprises. Also, it jointly enrolls post-doctors with 40 enterprise postdoctoral research stations. Moreover, it has established postgraduate workstations and joint training bases with 202 petroleum and petrochemical enterprises, set up student internship bases with 103 enterprises, and student social practice bases with 69 petroleum and petrochemical enterprises. Standing at a new historical starting point, CUP will insistently strive to build itself into a “world-class” research university in petroleum and petrochemical sciences disciplines.
