BFSU - ICF : A Taste of Russia Campus News

International Culture Festival (ICF) presents a great opportunity for students to share the culture of their home countries! Although Russians are not in majority in International Business School, but it didn’t stop us and we decided that we should show and share our culture with students of BFSU. 

Russian team was participating in ICF for the second time. This time we spent more time on decorations as it is very important to create atmosphere inside the booth. When visitors were coming to experience and immerse in our culture, they could feel the Russian spirit. Moreover we prepared a lot of souvenirs for selling, so people can buy them as a memory of visiting our booth.

As for the food, we tried our best to present variety of dishes so people could «taste» our culture. Contemporary Russian cuisine is truly delicious. It is healthy because it mostly relies on naturally grown ingredients. It is also very filling because Russian dishes have tons of vegetable oil, sour cream and mayo. Russian national cuisine uses lots of grains and roots, vegetables and everything else that vast lands, rich woods and a plentiful of lakes and rivers have to offer.

Following are the dishes that we cooked for the festival: 

1. Blini

The French have their crepes, the Americans have their pancakes, and the Russians have their blinis. A blini is a very thin circle of batter used to hold hot food and can be filled with anything to accommodate every unique taste.  

2. Kotleti

Russian cutlets or kotleti might remind you of burger patties or meat balls, they are, after all are made out of ground beef. However, their shape is different than meat balls or patties, and because Russians love rich flavor in their food, kotleti might contain more then just ground meat and spices. 

3. Olivier: Russian salad that is French

This one is a staple of any Russian special occasion and there are countless variations and personal takes on this recipe. The original was the creation of a French chef working in Russia in the 19th century, and has since become definitive “Russian salad.” It is a potato salad with many variations to it.In its most basic form, it is diced potatoes and cooked vegetables, mixed in mayonnaise.  

4. Medovik

Medovik is probably the greatest Russian cake of all time. With honey as its most important ingredient, this multi-layered biscuit pie has a tender taste thanks to its creamy filling. This cake was invented in the early 19thcentury by an unknown confectioner that worked at the court of Tsar Alexander I.

In our vision, learning about Russian culture is an excellent way to understand Russian-speaking people. Russian culture has a rich history, strong traditions and influential arts, especially when it comes to literature, philosophy, classical music, ballet, architecture, painting, cinema and animation. These resources can help people to learn about many aspects of the Russian cultural heritage.
