One of the on-going China's Mega Project, the "Hong Kong - Zhuhai - Macao Bridge" has entered the final stage in construction.
The Bridge consists of a series of bridges, 2 man-made artificial islands and undersea tunnels that will connect Hong Kong, Macau and Zhuhai, three major cities on the Pearl River Delta (PRD) in China. It will provide a direct link for passengers and freight traffic heading for the western part of the PRD to ease traffic congestion at the Hong Kong-Shenzhen cross-border checkpoints and reduce the economic losses arising from the daily hold-up at these border crossings..
The proposed 50 km link is expected to cost US$10.6 billion. The longest bridge section will be 29.6 km (18.4 mile) long and will include three cable-stayed spans between 280 and 460 m (920 and 1,510 ft). Construction formally began on 15 December 2009.
